Mexico become first team to host FIFA World Cup thrice

Mexico have become the first team to host or co-host the FIFA World Cup three times. They achieved the feat by hosting the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against South Africa on Friday (IST). The tournament is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the US and Canada. Notably, Mexico previously hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986.
