Microplastics release harmful chemicals in water under sunlight

A study published in journal New Contaminants examined four common types of plastic. Researchers compared chemicals released from these plastics to the natural organic matter present in rivers. Exposure to light caused greater release of chemicals into water. These microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter form complex "chemical clouds" that affect microbial growth and disturb nutrient cycles.
