Military-backed party on course to win general election in war-torn Myanmar
Myanmar Army chief Min Aung Hlaing dismissed foreign criticism of Myanmar’s general election after the final round of voting concluded. The army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party won 193 of 209 seats in lower house and 52 of 78 in upper house. Major opposition groups did not contest the elections amid an ongoing civil war triggered by military’s 2021 coup.
