Moon may have formed in 5 hrs after planet Theia hit Earth: Study

A study published in Astrophysical Journal Letters said the moon may have formed within five hours after an ancient planet named Theia smashed into Earth around 4.5 billion years ago. Researchers said they created computer simulations of the collision. They found that Earth and Theia's heat led to debris coming together in around five hours, leading to the moon's creation.
