Jaykumar Vaidya, who grew up in a small room in Mumbai's Kurla slum, overcame poverty to build a career at NASA. His mother worked odd jobs, while he repaired televisions and taught students to fund his education. His interest in robotics earned him national and state awards before research opportunities took him to the University of Virginia and NASA.
