American author Robert Greene said on a podcast that Napoleon Bonaparte was history's great motivator because he mixed harshness with kindness. He protected his soldiers, then made a show of being the meanest man alive, Greene said. Those slaps in the face kept them thinking about him, even as he led millions to their deaths.
