National Anthem was adopted 39 years after it was first sung

Indian national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' was first sung on December 27, 1911, at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. India had no official national anthem at the time of independence as 'Jana Gana Mana' was adopted as the national anthem by the Constituent Assembly on January 24, 1950. The anthem was composed by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.
