Nepal plans $50M project to drain four glacial lakes

Nepal will drain four high-altitude glacial lakes — Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, and Hongu II — under a $50 million project to prevent glacial lake outburst floods. Design work begins by mid-2027, with drainage taking up to six years. The project includes early-warning systems and monitoring sensors to protect downstream communities.
