New bat virus detected in Bangladesh, scientists warn

Scientists have detected human infections of a bat-borne virus, Pteropine orthoreovirus (PRV), in Bangladesh, raising fresh public health concerns. The virus caused severe Nipah-like symptoms, but tested negative for Nipah. Researchers warn bat viruses may be infecting humans more often than recognised, highlighting the need for expanded surveillance beyond the Nipah virus.
