New penguin species found after more than 100 years

Scientists have identified a previously unrecognised gentoo penguin species, Pygoscelis kerguelensis, on the remote Kerguelen Islands. It is the first new penguin species to be formally named in more than a century. Genetic analysis of 64 penguins found four distinct gentoo species, which diverged 3,00,000–5,00,000 years ago. Researchers warned climate change could reduce its habitat by 2050.
