A new Smithsonian-led study has estimated that the Moon's radius has shrunk by around 45 metres over the past 400-800 million years. Researchers mapped more than 10,000 young faults using images captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, linking the contraction to its cooling interior. Scientists estimate the Moon shrinks 6-11 centimetres every million years.
