Under new laws in the US state of Texas, people are now allowed to carry handguns openly for the first time since 1871. Texans who clear the required background checks to carry concealed weapons will be allowed to carry holstered handguns in public. The open carry law was passed by a Republican-dominated legislature and took effect on January 1, 2016.
