New traffic light system detects when people want to cross street

Austria-based researchers have developed a new system with camera-equipped traffic lights that automatically detects when people want to cross the streets. The computer vision scans a 26-by-16 feet area for the system, which is flexible and thus can also extend green lights for a larger group of pedestrians. The Günther Pincher company is rolling out the system in Vienna.
