Nuking asteroid from inside better than surface blast: Study

A study published by Chinese researchers in 'Space: Science and Technology' said detonating nuclear bombs on the surface of Earth-bound asteroids may not be effective against large asteroids. Scientists suggested creating a crater in an asteroid and detonating a nuclear bomb from inside to destroy it. They termed the method "pre-excavation detonation" and said simulations found it to be effective.
