Oldest known active termite hills discovered in South Africa

Scientists in South Africa discovered termite mounds more than 30,000 years old, the oldest known active termite hills. Radiocarbon dating estimated some mounds near the Buffels River in Namaqualand to be 34,000 years old. Researchers from Stellenbosch University noted these mounds existed alongside sabre-toothed cats and woolly mammoths and have been consistently inhabited by termite colonies.
