Oldest oceanic crust dating back 340mn-yrs found

An Israeli geologist has identified that the eastern Mediterranean Sea contains the world's oldest oceanic crust which could be almost 340 million years old. The findings were obtained by studying the nature and age of the 7,000 km of marine-magnetic-profiles. Most oceanic crusts are less than 200 million years old as they are typically recycled back into earth's mantle rapidly.
