Oldest-known bat skeletons belong to previously unknown species
The two oldest-known fossil skeletons of bats, which were unearthed in the US and date back to at least 52 million years ago, are of a previously unknown species called Icaronycteris gunnelli. "This bat was not much different than the insectivorous bats flying around today," lead author of a study Tim Rietbergen said. Its teeth had sharp cusps and crests.
