According to a first direct estimate of inter-caste marriages in India, only 5.4% Indians said they married a person outside their caste. While inter-caste marriages are most common in Gujarat and Bihar, they are rarest in Madhya Pradesh. Further, according to the India Human Development Survey, 30% of rural and 20% of urban households said they practised untouchability.
