The Indian Peace Keeping Force had commenced its Operation Pawan against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka on October 11, 1987. The battle lasted for about three weeks and resulted in India being able to take control of the Jaffna Peninsula. The operation led to the loss of hundreds of lives from both the sides.
