Loss of tree 2.33 million hectares. Between 2000 and 2023,there was a 6% decrease in tree cover, with 414,000 hectares of primary forest lost. Forests emitted 51 million tons of carbon dioxide annually but absorbed 141 million tons,resulting in a net carbon sink of 89.9 million tons yearly. Majority of tree cover loss (95%) occurred within natural forests.
