Over 5.9 crore taxpayers file ITRs before deadline in 2026

More than 5.9 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed for Assessment Year 2026-27 by the July 31 deadline, according to the Income Tax Department. The due date applied to taxpayers who were not required to undergo an audit. In comparison, over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed last year, when the filing deadline had been extended to September.
