Person converting to Islam can’t claim Backward Class status: Madras HC
The Madras High Court has ruled that a person converting to Islam cannot claim the status of a Backward Class category Muslim. The court made the ruling while declaring a 2024 Tamil Nadu government order that granted reservation in such cases as unconstitutional. Categorising some sects as 'Backward' and rest as 'Forward' is antithetical to Quranic injunctions, the court said.
