The Punjab and Haryana High Court on October 31 criticised the newly enacted Punjab Protection of Trees Act, calling it 'draconian legislation' that reduces tree protection to permissions and payments. The bench warned it would cause serious environmental damage and directed the Punjab government to file its response by Monday. Haryana said it would review its similar draft legislation.
