Rare palm that flowers & bears fruits underground discovered

Scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens (RGB) have discovered a distinctive member of the palm family that predominantly flowers and bears fruit underground. This previously unknown species has been named Pinanga subterranea, meaning underground in Latin. Native to the tropical island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, this plant bears bright-red fruit, which is said to be sweet and juicy.
