Rare purple sea snail shell washed up on a California beach

A rare purple sea snail shell has washed up on a California beach. Experts identified it as Janthina, or violet sea snail, a species that lives drifting offshore. Unlike typical snails, it floats upside down, surviving on ocean surface using a bubble raft formed from air trapped in mucus secreted by the snail, which allows it to drift with currents.
