Researchers discover a new type of photosynthesis

The Imperial College London researchers have discovered a new type of photosynthesis that uses near-infrared light instead of visible light used for photosynthesis. They found that some blue-green algae deactivate 'chlorophyll-a' used in standard photosynthesis and switch to 'chlorophyll-f', allowing photosynthesis in shade. This may pave the way for more efficient engineered crops, they said.
