Root breaks record for scoring most runs in a year by an Englishman in Test history

England captain Joe Root broke the record for scoring the most runs in a calendar year by an Englishman, overtaking former England captain Michael Vaughan's mark of 1,481 runs in 2002. Root achieved the feat during the evening session of the third day of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Root has played 25 innings in 2021 so far.
