Same village marriages shake norms in Punjab's rural areas

In February this year, a man from Dhariwal Kaler village near Ajnala married a girl who lived in the neighbouring house. Both in their early twenties, the couple's union quickly became the subject of villagewide discussion. At the heart of the issue lies a deeply rooted social norm in rural Punjab, where marriages within the same village are considered taboo.
