SC freezes BMC chief's salary over failure to clear encroachments

The Supreme Court ordered an immediate freeze on the salary of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and other civic officials. The court gave the direction while initiating contempt of court proceedings against her for failing to clear encroachments from government land earmarked for a BEST bus stand. It also imposed costs of ₹5 lakh on the municipal body.
