Scientists create world's first tomatoes that smell like buttered popcorn

A team of Chinese and Australian researchers has developed a new tomato variety with a buttered popcorn-like aroma using advanced gene-editing technology. With this, scientists aim to tackle the problem of tomatoes losing flavour and aroma during transportation and storage. Using CRISPR/Cas9, the scientists simultaneously modified two key genes, SlBADH1 and SlBADH2, in existing tomato varieties.
