Scientists discover ancient DNA switches hidden in plants

Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have identified over 2.3 million regulatory DNA sequences conserved across 314 plant genomes from 284 species with some dating back more than 400 million years. These conserved non-coding sequences act like genetic switches, controlling when and how genes are activated. The sequences were detected using a new computational tool called Conservatory.
