Scientists discover giant salamander species in 3.5-mn-yr-old fossils

Scientists at Kyoto University have identified a giant salamander species from 3.5 million-year-old fossils discovered in Japan over two decades ago. Named Limnospondylus ajimuensis, its bones were preserved in the Tsubusugawa Formation, a layer of ancient lake sediments. Researchers estimate the animal grew up to 1.1 metres long, suggesting other unknown salamander species among the fossils.
