Scientists discover protein that links DNA repair to cancer

Scientists at Houston Methodist have found that the protein TDP43 linked to dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), affects genes responsible for correcting DNA replication errors. When its levels become too low or too high, these repair genes turn overly active. The resulting imbalance may damage neurons and destabilise the genome, potentially increasing the risk of cancer development.
