Scientists have explained why mint feels cold. A sensory receptor in the skin, oral cavity and eyes called TRPM8 helps trigger a nerve signal when temperatures drop which reaches the brain and produces sensation of cold. Menthol, which is found in mint, has a similar effect on the receptor, triggering the same signal hence causing a cooling sensation, scientists said.
