Scientists uncover how Giant's Causeway was formed in the UK
UK-based scientists have reproduced in the laboratory the process through which the 40,000 near-perfect hexagonal columns were formed in Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. The study found that magma fractured and cooled into the basaltic columns at temperatures between 840-890ºC. The Causeway formed around 50-60 million years ago during intense volcanic activity after a magma lake cooled down.
