Service charge & tips voluntary, cannot be imposed by restaurants or hotels: Delhi HC

Delhi High Court ruled on Friday that restaurants and hotels cannot mandatorily impose service charges or ask for tips from customers. Restaurant and hotel industry bodies FHRAI and NRAI had filed petitions against competition regulator CCPA's guidelines released in July 2022 banning mandatory service charge addition to food bills. Voluntary tipping by consumers remains permitted, the court said.
