Cases of extensively drug-resistant sexually transmitted diarrhoea are rising in US, multiple reports said citing a study published by US' CDC in April 2026. Extensively drug-resistant Shigella, which spreads through faecal-oral contact, contaminated food or water and sexual contact, has limited treatment options. The bacteria can cause diarrhoea, fever and stomach pain.
