Singapore expresses concern over rising 'sham marriages'

Singaporean authorities have expressed concern over increasing 'sham marriages' between Singaporean men and foreign women. In such marriages, foreign women often pay Singaporean men to arrange a union, allowing the women to obtain a permit to stay/work in Singapore. Those involved in such marriages could be jailed for up to 10 years or fined up to SGD 10,000 or both.
