The game of Snakes & Ladders was created by the 13th-century poet saint Gyandev. It was originally called 'Mokshapat' and was used as a part of moral instruction to children with the ladders representing virtues and the snakes indicating vices. The square 100, the ultimate goal in the game, represented Nirvana or 'moksha'.
