Solid metallic ball discovered within Earth's inner core

Seismologists at Australian National University said they've documented evidence of a fifth layer underneath Earth's inner core. New findings suggest the existence of a solid ball of iron measuring about 650 km across. It has a different crystal structure that causes shock waves from earthquakes to reverberate through the layer at different speeds than the surrounding core, the study found.
