Study explains why memories of images feel as real as seeing them

A study by Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University found the same neurons are activated when we imagine and see images. The researchers asked 16 epilepsy patients with implanted electrodes to view and later imagine images. When patients viewed images, fusiform gyrus neurons activated, with 80% showing specific responses, while about 40% later reactivated with the same patterns during imagination.
