Study reveals why people with schizophrenia hear voices

A UNSW Sydney study suggests that hearing voices in schizophrenia may occur when the brain misinterprets internal thoughts as external sounds. This means normally silent thoughts are perceived as real sounds. The research, published in Schizophrenia Bulletin, could help identify biological markers for schizophrenia, a condition that currently lacks unique blood test, brain scan, or lab indicator.
