Study reveals why sea sparkle blooms are rising in Indian waters

Sea sparkle blooms, caused by Noctiluca scintillans, are becoming more common in Indian waters as dissolved silicate levels decline. New research links the change to reduced river-borne silica, which supports diatoms and healthy marine food webs. The resulting blooms can disrupt ecosystems, alter food chains, lower oxygen levels and encourage bacterial growth.
