Swiss glaciers lose 5.5% in ice volume in 2026, 2nd-biggest loss

Swiss glaciers have lost nearly 20% of their mass over the past five years, with 2026 recording the second-largest annual decline, according to the Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS) network. Glaciers lost 5.5% of their ice this year, driven by low winter snowfall and record summer temperatures. It warned that continued warming could threaten the long-term survival of Alpine glaciers.
