Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who passed away on August 7, 1941, renounced his knighthood after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The massacre took place in Amritsar on April 13, 1919 when the crowd in Jallianwala Bagh was fired upon by British Indian Army. Tagore wrote a letter to the Viceroy of India after the incident to renounce the British honorary title.
