Taliban bans chess in Afghanistan, calls it against 'Sharia'

Afghanistan's Taliban government has suspended chess across the country until further notice, citing that chess is "considered a means of gambling" under Islamic Sharia law. In 2024, the Taliban also banned mixed martial arts (MMA) and other free fighting championships, calling them too “violent” and “problematic with respect to Sharia". Women remain completely barred from participating in sports.
