Thousands of flowers bloom in world's driest place

Thousands of flowers have bloomed in Chile's Atacama desert, the driest place in the world, following heavy rains in mid-August. The periodic phenomenon, called 'desierto florido' or flowering desert, takes place after a period of five to seven years when buried seeds flower following rains. However, this time the 'desierto florido' phenomenon occurred after a period of two years.
