A top Al Shabaab leader, Qasim Sheikh was killed in a secret operation by the Somali army on Friday. Sheikh was a former government official in Somalia before joining the Al Qaeda-linked group, and was leading operations for Al Shabaab. The government troops launched an operation against Sheikh after receiving information from intelligence that he was hiding near Hudur.
