India's goal to achieve 20% ethanol blending by 2025 is a massive win for emissions, but it comes with dangerous trade-offs. A new study in PLOS ONE by researchers at IIM Ahmedabad shows that expanding first-generation biofuels could drive up food prices and trigger critical water shortages unless the government changes which crop sources it prioritizes.
