Transgender Amendment Bill gets Presidential assent amid protests

Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, received presidential assent on March 30. The Bill, which was passed by both houses last week, redefines who qualifies as a transgender person and removes the provision of self-perceived gender identity. It faced protests across the country with protesters saying it criminalises "lived realities of transgender communities".
